ON THE MAPS: A surface front is located north of Alabama near the Tennessee/Kentucky border; this represents the leading edge of a cooler, drier continental airmass. To the north, Silver Bay, Minnesota reports 37 degrees at daybreak… pretty remarkable for the middle of August, even in Minnesota.

As the front moves down toward North Alabama, we expect to see another increase in showers and storms by midday and on through the afternoon hours. Like recent days, stronger storms will bring lots of lightning and heavy rain.

TOMORROW/THURSDAY: The weather will all depend on the southward progression of the front. The GFS is faster, and brings drier air down into the northern half of Alabama tomorrow, while the GFS is wetter tomorrow, and holds off the drier air until tomorrow night and Thursday. One way or another, the northern third of the state will be drier on these two days, with the most numerous showers and storms over Central and South Alabama.

For those lucky enough to get into the drier air over North Alabama, there will be a nice touch of fall early Thursday morning with a low in the 58-64 degree range.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: The front will fizzle out, and moist air moves northward. This, of course, means some risk of showers and storms on all three of these days. However, the most widespread and heavy rain, most likely, will be east of I-65, and south of I-85 (most of South Alabama) as a tropical wave moves into the coast from the Gulf of Mexico. Very unlikely this becomes a depression or storm, but waves can be very effective rain producers. From South Alabama, the axis of heavier rain will move northeast up into Georgia and parts of the Carolinas.

Highs around here will hold in the mid to upper 80s over the next seven days… no sign of any 90 degree heat for a while. And, considering the fact this is mid-August, we must be living right.

GULF COAST WEATHER: The weather will be somewhat unsettled for the rest of the week into the beginning of the weekend. About 2 to 3 hours of sunshine each day with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. The rain could be heavy at times Friday, and possibly into Saturday, with the tropical wave mentioned above. Sea water temperatures are generally in the mid 80s, and highs on the coast will also hold in the 80s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Other than a wave over the Caribbean, the tropics remain rather quiet this morning. Watch the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
