THIS AFTERNOON: Temperatures are much lower across Alabama this afternoon, but a little warmer than forecast. We had expected a high in the low 40s; most places over Central Alabama are in the mid 40s this afternoon. We started the day with clouds, drizzle, and some snow. Below is an image taken near DeSoto State Park from Timmy Reed earlier today (thanks to Jason Simpson for sharing the image)

The sky cleared late this morning, and most communities are enjoying a sunny, but chilly afternoon. We do note on radar convective snow showers near the Alabama/Tennessee border; some of this snow will creep down into the Tennessee Valley over the next few hours, but no accumulation is expected.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: Tonight will be fair and cold; most communities will drop into the 20-25 degree range early tomorrow morning. The day tomorrow will feature a good supply of sunshine with a high in the mid to upper 40s.

MORE COLD AIR ARRIVES FRIDAY: Another “Alberta Clipper” will bring another shot of colder air down into Alabama Friday. There could be a few early morning flurries, but the air will be dry and any flurries will be insignificant. Friday will be partly sunny and breezy with a high in the low 40s. A northwest wind of 10-20 mph will make it feel colder.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: It starts with a cold morning Saturday; the low will be in the 17-24 degree range over North/Central Alabama. Expect a sunny sky both Saturday and Sunday; we reach the low 50s Saturday, and the latest model data suggests the cold air with the next clipper will stay mostly north and east of Alabama, so it now looks like we warm into the mid 50s Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: The high Monday and Tuesday will be close to 60 degrees; we will mention a small risk of a shower Tuesday with a passing front, followed by another shot of colder air Wednesday when highs will drop into the 40s.

No sign of any major winter storms or severe weather issues through the end of January as we look into the medium range; see the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
