RADAR CHECK: The large area of rain that moved over Alabama during the night is pushing out of the state, and we have just a few lingering showers early this morning.

The day ahead will be mostly cloudy, and the lingering showers should end this morning… the bulk of the afternoon and tonight should be dry; the high will be in the low 70s.

TOMORROW AND SATURDAY: While a shower is certainly possible on these days, rain will be very scattered and light. The sky will be mostly cloudy, although we could see a few intervals of sunshine, especially on Saturday. Afternoon highs will remain in the low 70s.

SATURDAY NIGHT/SUNDAY: The next major wave in the southern branch of the jet stream will bring widespread rain to the state. The GFS has trended a little slower, suggesting the bulk of the rain comes after midnight Saturday night and during the day Sunday. Some thunder is possible Sunday, but no severe weather expected with no surface based instability. Rain amounts will be close to one inch with this wave.

NEXT WEEK: Drier air returns to the state Monday with a clearing sky, and we expect a good supply of sunshine Tuesday and Wednesday with afternoon highs in the low 70s. Showers will return toward the end of the week with a cold front approaching.

LATE MONTH: The GFS is still advertising a cold snap around Saturday March 28 with potential for a morning freeze… get the details on the Weather Xtreme video.

VERNAL EQUINOX: The first “official” day of spring is tomorrow; the sun will be directly over the equator at 5:45p CDT; we will have approximately 12 hours of daylight, and 12 hours of darkness.

BEACH FORECAST: Expect more clouds than sun on the Gulf coast from Panama City over to Gulf Shores through Saturday with just a few scattered showers around. Rain becomes widespread on the coast late Saturday night and Sunday, with thunderstorms possible as well. Highs on the immediate coast will be close to 70, and the sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 65 degrees.
