RADAR CHECK: Not much happening on radar across Alabama this afternoon; just a few small showers linger over far East Alabama. The sky is mostly cloudy, and we have cold air damming impacting Northeast Alabama. The “wedge” is sending colder air into counties like DeKalb, Cherokee, and Etowah, where Gadsden reports only 55 degrees at mid-afternoon. Elsewhere, temperatures are mostly in the upper 60s and low 70s.

Temperatures

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: The sky will remain mostly cloudy, and a shower is possible, but rain should be light and spotty. The high tomorrow for most communities will be in the low 70s.

OUR WEEKEND: Saturday looks like a pretty decent day with internals of sunshine possible and a high in the low 70s. Clouds increase Saturday night as rain moves into the southwest part of the state. Sunday looks like a wet day, with widespread rain along and south of U.S. 278 (Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden). Looks like a cool rain with temperatures holding in the 50s much of the day… that stable air means no severe weather, and probably no thunder.

Heaviest rain Sunday should come over South Alabama, where amounts of 1-2 inches are possible. For north/central counties, amounts of around one inch are likely.

NEXT WEEK: Rain will taper off Monday morning, and Tuesday and Wednesday look rain-free with ample sunshine along with highs up in the low 70s. Some rain will return toward the end of the week as a cold front approaches, and there is a chance sharply colder air will move into the state around the weekend of March 28-29. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Expect more clouds than sunshine tomorrow and Saturday with a few widely scattered showers. Widespread rain is likely Sunday, but drier air returns to the region (Panama City west to Gulf Shores) early next week. Highs on the immediate coast will be around 70 degrees, and sea water temperatures are in the mid 60s.

VERNAL EQUINOX: Spring “officially” arrives at 5:45 p.m. CDT tomorrow, when the sun is directly over the equator. This is the day when we have approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
