RADAR CHECK: The heaviest rain across Alabama this afternoon is over the southern quarter of the state, otherwise we have scattered showers and thunderstorms in various pockets that are moving to the southeast. Temperatures are mostly in the 80s, but where rain is falling we are seeing many places in the 70s; the average high for Birmingham on August 20 is 91.

UNSETTLED WEATHER CONTINUES: A unstable airmass will remain in place through tomorrow, meaning scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms both days. Most, but not all, of the rain will come from noon to midnight, and like recent days the heavier storms will be very efficient rain producers in this environment. Sunshine will be very limited, and temperatures will remain below average with highs mostly in the mid 80s.

FRED MAKES LANDFALL: Tropical Storm Fred made landfall around 2:15 this afternoon at Cape San Blas with sustained winds of 65 mph. The system will weaken quickly as it moves northeast tonight. However, it will still bring significant weather issues to parts of the Southeast U.S. The remnant circulation will move into northern Georgia tomorrow.

North of the front, the air is drier, and temperatures are in the mid 60s in many places. But, to the south, humid air lingers with temperatures in the 70s. Showers and storms are moving slowly to the east/southeast, and stronger storms are dumping heavy amounts of rain in this moist, unstable airmass. Away from the showers, we have a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures in the 87-90 degree range. Showers will fade tonight once the sun goes down.
