Snow will likely melt on roads as it begins, but with temperatures falling well down in the 20s today, there is a high probability of a very quick freeze, creating a glaze of ice, making driving difficult, if not impossible in some places. There is some similarity to the January 28, 2014 “Snowmageddon” event. Not saying today will be as bad, but the setup is not that different.

DRY, WARMER TODAY: Before we get into the specifics about the snow situation for Alabama tomorrow, today will be a mostly sunny day with a warmer afternoon; we project a high around 50 degrees. This actually could be a bad thing; the pavement/asphalt surfaces will retain some of this heat, leading to a potential problem tomorrow. Snow will fall on the warmer surfaces tomorrow, leading to melting, but with very cold air in place tomorrow (we will be in the 20s most of the day), we could see a “flash freeze” type situation that could put down a thin base of ice on road surfaces.
Yesterday’s snow across Central Alabama was the biggest one for so early in the season. Data is still being compiled, but for Birmingham, with an official total of 4 inches, it was the third snowiest December day on record. Only surpassed by 8 inches during the famous New Year’s Eve event on December 31, 1963… […]

THIS AFTERNOON: Most of the precipitation is over the southern half of the state this afternoon; we note a number of reports of sleet on the northern periphery of the big rain mass; there will be no impact with temperatures well above freezing this afternoon. Most communities are in the mid 40s.
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY: A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for parts of Northeast, Central, and Southwest Alabama from 3:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. tomorrow.
WINTER WEATHER MISCHIEF TOMORROW: With the upper trough approaching tomorrow, precipitation will increase over the southern two-thirds of the state, and cold, Arctic air will creep in from the north.
