Portions of central AL upgraded to an extreme cold warning for tonight
An extreme cold warning has been issued for southwest Alabama as dangerously low wind chills, prolonged freezing temperatures, and infrastructure risks create hazardous conditions across the region.
It is a miserable afternoon across North and Central Alabama on this January Sunday. No change in the forecast as we deal with the coldest temperatures of the season and brace for a winter storm Tuesday.

A bitter Arctic blast will bring dangerously cold temperatures, wind chills near zero, and a Winter Storm Watch for accumulating snow and ice Tuesday, leading to hazardous travel conditions across much of Alabama.
Dangerously cold conditions will impact Alabama tonight through Wednesday. In addition, confidence is increasing that travel problems and disruptions from snow will impact much of Central and South Alabama starting Tuesday morning into Wednesday.
Cold weather over the next few days will allow for winter precipitation to occur in some areas on Tuesday.
A winter storm still appears likely early next week, with winter storm watches likely to be issued tonight/early tomorrow morning.
A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for all of Central Alabama, taking effect from midnight Sunday night through 11 AM CST Monday. During this period, dangerously cold wind chills are expected to drop as low as around zero, posing significant risks to both health and property.
Radar check at 12:00PM shows that much of the state is dry with only a few scattered light showers or drizzle showing up over portions of Madison County in North Alabama, and for a few showers located along and in between the I-85 and US-280 corridors in southeast Alabama.
For today, we’ll have a warm font that will push northeastward through Alabama, bringing warm temperatures and a good bit of moisture for showers and maybe even a few rumbles of thunder.
RAIN ARRIVES TONIGHT: Clouds will continue to increase across Alabama this evening ahead of a disturbance that will bring periods of rain to the state tonight and tomorrow. At this point it looks like the most widespread rain will come overnight tonight, with just lingering showers tomorrow
