A Great Midday For Central Alabama, Rain Returns For Saturday

| November 17, 2017 @ 12:29 pm

CONDITIONS AT 12:20 PM

Other than a few clouds over the northwestern quarter of the state that have floated in from the upcoming system that will be bring rain and a few storms to the area on Saturday, we have clear skies with maximum sunshine. Temperatures at this time are in the 60s to 70 degrees throughout the area, with Selma and Troy tied as the warm spots at 70 degrees. Birmingham was at 66 degrees, while Cullman is the cool spot at 62 degrees.

WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR FRIDAY

We’ll continue to have mostly clear to clear skies across Central Alabama for the remainder of the daytime and early evening hours. A few clouds will start to move in the western parts of the area during the latter part of the evening and into the overnight hours, and those will move over much of the area before daybreak. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 60s to the lower 70s. Conditions for tonight’s high school football games will be dry and cool, with temperatures starting out in the mid-50s to the lower 60s at kickoff, and dropping into the 50s to the lower 60s by the final whistle. Overnight lows will be in the upper 40s to the upper 50s.

SATURDAY’S WEATHER

A cold front will be quickly moving through Central Alabama during the daytime and into the evening hours tomorrow. Winds will be a little breezy as the pressure gradient tightens out ahead of the front, but much of the forcing dynamics will stay north of the area, and this will keep much of the severe weather threat out. There is the possibility of a few storms in the extreme northern parts of the area to have some gusty winds and hail, but these will be growing weaker as the progression through the area occurs.

Rain will be scattered in nature along and ahead of the front, and those should be entering the northwestern corner of the area by late morning, and making it to the Birmingham Metropolitan Area around 3-5PM. Those showers will be reaching the southeastern corner of the area by the 4-6PM time frame. Afternoon highs will be in the lower to mid-70s.

Models are showing a narrow band of rain moving through just behind the front, and once this band moves through, all of the rainfall should come to an end for your location. This band should be exiting the state by 10PM-Midnight. Skies will quickly clear behind the band, and overnight lows will drop into the upper 30s to the mid-40s.

SUNDAY’S WEATHER

With the cold front moving through the area on Saturday, you can expect much cooler and dry air to move in for the day on Sunday. Skies will be absolutely clear with maximum sunshine, with afternoon highs only in the low to mid-50s for much of Central Alabama, with upper 50s in the southern parts. Get ready for freezing temperatures for overnight lows, as we can see upper 20s to the lower 30s across much of the area. Some of the colder spots could see mid-20s.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEATHER

Alabama will be hosting Mercer at Bryant-Denny Stadium, with the kickoff scheduled for 11:00 AM. We’ll have mostly cloudy skies throughout the game and a chance of a shower during the second half. Temperatures will be in the mid 60s at kickoff and near 70 degrees for the second half.

Auburn will be hosting Louisiana-Monroe at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with the kickoff scheduled for 11:00 AM. No rain issues during the game, but skies will be mostly cloudy. Temperatures will be in the upper 60s to the lower 70s.

UAB makes a visit to Gainesville to take on Florida, with kickoff scheduled at 3:00 PM CST. Expect mostly sunny skies throughout the game, with temperatures in the upper 70s at kickoff, and dropping back into the mid-70s for the second half.
