Weather Roundup for 2/10/17: Winter Heat in the Plains; Winter Not Far Away

A big ridge of high pressure across the Southern Plains, as well as downslope from the Rockies will lead to some hot weather over northeastern Mexico, the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma today.

It was already a sizzling 90F at Canadian in the Texas Panhandle at noon and 90F at Guymon in the Oklahoma Panhandle.. There will be lots of 90s in western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle this afternoon..

Gary McManus, the Oklahoma State Climatologist thinks they might break the record for hottest ever so early in the season today. In 1911, it was 93F on February 1st at Guthrie and Cloud Chief. The state’s record for February 10th is 87F back in 1976 at Pauls Valley.

Red Flag Warnings are in effect for the Plains of southeastern Colorado, northeastern New Mexico, western Kansas and the Panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma. They are in effect as well from Central Oklahoma into southern Missouri.

To the west, a winter storm is spreading across the West. 4-10 inches of snow will fall in mountainous areas of Colorado starting late tonight through early Sunday.
Strong winds will also be a problem.

In California, the fire hose of moisture off the Pacific is pointed more at Southern California this time. Alex Tardy, the WCM at the National Weather Service in San Diego says they expecting an unusual occurrence in San Diego tonight and Saturday morning: a chance of rain.

One to two inches may fall in areas just north of Los Angeles, with LA expecting one half inch. They are already nearly double their normal rainfall for the water year at Los Angeles, with nearly 13 inches against an average of just over six inches.

Flood watches cover much of the eastern San Joaquin Valley. Flood warnings are still in effect for a large part of Central Interior California.

High surf advisories are in effect for Southern California beaches as well. A swell of 7-8 feet is expected to pound the beaches of Orange and San Diego Counties through Saturday evening.

Snowmelt is the problem across northern Nevada, eastern Oregon, Wyoming and Idaho where many rivers are in life threatening flooding.

The big winter storm that has buried much of the Megalopolis in snow is now over the Canadian Maritimes. Winter weather advisories still cover southeastern Maine.
