Tranquil Weather for the Upcoming Week

| April 9, 2017 @ 6:46 am

The sky across the Southeast US was clear with a few wisps of high clouds present. As the surface high slides off into the Atlantic today, our surface wind will come around more out of the south, so I expect to see highs for most of Central Alabama in the upper 70s as the gorgeous weather continues. But the morning began a bit chilly especially in the northeast portion of Alabama. Our SkyWatcher there reported a low of 33 with frost once again.

The week ahead looks pretty tranquil. An upper ridge will remain in place for much of the week ahead, so our high temperatures should climb into the lower 80s starting Monday and generally remain in the 80 to 84 range. Morning lows will be fairly mild, too, with most mornings dropping into the upper 50s. The upper ridge will ebb and flow somewhat as it remains the primary upper air feature through next weekend. The eastward moving short waves will remain well north of Central Alabama. One particularly strong short wave moving across the Great Lakes on Tuesday and Wednesday is forecast by the GFS and European to bring a weak cold front into North Alabama. That front is forecast by both models to essentially wash out on Wednesday, but there could be enough moisture along with reasonably good afternoon heating to help generate a few showers or thunderstorms, but I think most of us will remain dry.

The upper ridge builds back into the eastern portion of the country for the latter part of the week and into the weekend. A weak short wave is forecast to move across the Tennessee River Valley Friday and Saturday, but I think the main impact of that weak feature will be a few more clouds and little potential for shower development. Highs next weekend will still be around 80 with lows around 60.

Beach weather looks great for the next seven days, too. Sunshine will be plentiful along the Alabama and Northwest Florida Gulf Coast with highs mainly in the 70s. Lows will only be in the 60s. WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.

I had a very nice Saturday sharing information about storm spotting with over 200 people at the BJCC at our Storm Spotter Xtreme. Thanks to all the folks who came out to learn more about severe weather in Alabama. James Spann will have the next Weather Xtreme Video first thing on Monday morning. Enjoy another gorgeous day. Godspeed.
