FREEZE WARNING: For many North Alabama communities, tomorrow will be the fourth consecutive morning with sub-freezing temperatures. Pretty remarkable considering that this is late March, and our average low is 45. The NWS in Birmingham has issued a freeze warning for most of the counties in their CWA (county warning area)… with a clear sky and light wind most places will drop into the 29-34 degree range early tomorrow.

WARMER DAYS: The warm-up resumes tomorrow afternoon; the high should be up in the mid 60s with a good supply of sunshine. Then, on Friday, we will see an increase in clouds, but still temperatures will push into the 67-70 degree range. We will mention the chance of a shower Friday afternoon and evening, especially north of U.S. 278, or north of a line from Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden. The rain Friday evening won’t be especially heavy or widespread, and the southern two-thirds of the state should remain dry.

EASTER WEEKEND: Scattered showers are possible Saturday over North Alabama… generally along and north of I-20. It won’t rain all day, but a passing shower or two is certainly possible. The high will be pretty close to 70 degrees as we continue to dig out of the deep freeze.

Sunday looks wet, with occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Rain amounts of 1/2 to one inch are likely, but we don’t expect any severe weather with the main dynamics far to the north of Alabama. There will be some instability available, so a storm or two is certainly possible… we just don’t expect them to be severe.

NEXT WEEK: Pure model madness is making for a very low confidence forecast. The 12Z models keep a stalled front just north of here Monday, meaning the chance of showers will continue Monday into Monday night. The GFS then drives colder and drier air in here Tuesday, and Wednesday will be cool and dry. Quite the contrast to the 00Z run of the same model which showed a big rain/strong storm event in here Wednesday.

The ECMWF keeps a chance of showers going Tuesday into Wednesday before the drier air arrives. We will just have to keep an eye on model trends for better clarity; see the afternoon Weather Xtreme video for the latest maps, graphics, and details.
