It appears that Central Alabama will have one more relatively nice Spring day to enjoy today even as clouds and moisture increase. Radar showed a few showers in the vicinity of Memphis this morning along an approaching front, however, I believe we’ll see a mostly dry day with the greatest threat for any small showers across the Tennessee River Valley. But overnight and into Sunday, the front will drop into our area as moisture levels increase, so it looks like widespread showers for Sunday. The upper short wave over the Great Lakes will give us a glancing blow, so while showers will occur, rainfall amounts are not expected to be especially heavy with amounts of one third to half an inch possible in some of the heavier showers. We might hear a little thunder, too, but I’m not expecting any severe weather threat for Central Alabama.

The upper level flow at 500 millibars goes nearly zonal for the Southeast US so the front is expected to push down to the Gulf Coast Monday allowing us to dry out with showers prevalent further to the south. But a strong, fast moving short wave moving out of South Central Canada will drop into the southern Appalachians on Tuesday bringing us another shot of cold air. This wave and the associated front have been showing without much moisture, so I doubt that we see any significant threat for any showers, but that does not mean that we can’t see some isolated showers Monday night and into the early hours of Tuesday. But keep the winter coats handy, because Tuesday and Wednesday will remind us that we can still see cold weather even if we are into official Spring season. Highs Tuesday and Wednesday are not expected to get out of the 50s and we are likely to see some frost on Wednesday morning with lows dropping to near 30 which means some locations getting into the 20s.

We should be dry Wednesday and Thursday, but moisture will be increasing to our west on Thursday ahead of yet another trough moving through the Mississippi River Valley on Friday and Saturday. Friday and Saturday will see scattered showers once again as this trough pushes another cold front through the area. Looks like Saturday will start with showers with showers ending during the day as the system progresses eastward. Temperatures should recover after the midweek chill down so that highs climb back to around 70 by Friday with lows mainly in the 40s.

Looking out into voodoo country and the pattern remains active with a continuation of a series of upper level disturbances that keep the eastern US on a roller coaster of weather with temperatures up and then down and rain chances every four days or so.

It was a hoot filling in for Charles yesterday on the Midday News and having the opportunity to speak with Sherri Shepherd from The View who paid us a visit. I told her that until yesterday my favorite View person was Whoopi Goldberg, but now that I’ve met her, she’s number one and Whoopi has moved to second!! And I didn’t even do a “selfie.” I expect to have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted by 8 or so on Sunday morning. Godspeed.
