Update Just Before Noon

| June 10, 2014 @ 11:48 am

Just before noon, thunderstorms were occurring across mainly the western half of Alabama generally along and west of Interstate 65. A few showers had developed in parts of Talladega and Shelby counties, too. Fortunately at this writing there have been no warnings so far this morning.

Much of Alabama with the exception of the northwest corner and the southeast quadrant were under severe thunderstorm watches until 6 pm except 7 pm in Southwest Alabama – due to two different watches.

The atmosphere across Central Alabama remained highly charged with CAPE values from the morning sounding at the Shelby County Airport running around 2500 j/kg. Aloft, a closed low more reminiscent of an early Spring pattern was located over Northwest Missouri. This low will not be moving much for the next 48 hours keeping us rather unsettled especially today.

Temperatures across Central Alabama were running in the lower 80s except where thunderstorms were occurring. Rain was keeping some spots in the 70s. But humidity levels are high with dew points in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

Besides the threat for severe thunderstorms with damaging wind and large hail, there is a risk for flash flooding thanks in part to the rain which has occurred over many sections during the last several days. While the tornado threat is not large, an isolated tornado may be possible.

In addition to these threats, we’re also into our lightning season, so take lightning seriously and don’t take any unnecessary chances while thunder is occurring near you. Lightning is frightening!!

Bottom line is to remain weather aware today and be safe.
