Coldest Night So Far This Season

TOO COLD FOR NOVEMBER: A number of North Alabama communities have failed to reach 40 degrees this afternoon; temperatures there are about 30 degrees below average for the middle of November in Alabama (we should be in the mid 60s). Some rain has been falling over far South Alabama, and a few scattered pockets of sleet have have been reported over the northern counties, and the sky has been generally cloudy.
The sky will clear from the west tonight, and we are still projecting a low between 22 and 25 degrees early tomorrow morning across North/Central Alabama.
TOMORROW/SATURDAY: The weather stays dry and cold. Expect a good supply of sunshine both days; the high tomorrow will be only in the mid 40s. Then, on Saturday, we begin the day down in the mid 20s again, but the high will be closer to 50 degrees by afternoon. Clouds begin to return late Saturday night.
RAIN RETURNS SUNDAY/MONDAY: Rain will begin at some point during the day Sunday; model consistency in the timing has not been very good; rain could begin during the morning Sunday over West Alabama, but the most widespread rain will come by mid to late afternoon into Sunday night. A surface low will form over South Alabama, and should bring rain totals of at least 1/2 to 1 inch for the north-central part of the state, with potential for over one inch of rain over the southern counties.
Sunday’s temperatures will depend on when the rain starts; if it begins early in the day, we won’t get out of the 40s. If the rain holds off until afternoon, we could creep up into the low to mid 50s.
MONDAY: The rain will end from west to east during the day Monday as another surge of colder air begins to arrive. The high resolution GFS model still hints at some chance of a few snow flakes over North Alabama as the system winds down…
Even if this happens we don’t expect any significant impact, but of course we will keep a close eye on model trends over the next few days. Temperatures could very well fall into the 30s Monday afternoon after the rain moves out.
REST OF NEXT WEEK: Very cold air arrives Monday night, and we don’t expect to get out of the 30s Tuesday with an icy north breeze. The coldest morning should come early Wednesday, with average lows between 18 and 23 degrees. Then, a slow day to day warming trend begins Wednesday afternoon. FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school playoff games tomorrow night, we project a kickoff temperature around 38 degrees, then falling through the 30s during the games. Needless to say, you will need to bundle up. The sky will be clear.
The biggest college game in the country will be in Tuscaloosa Saturday as Mississippi State comes to town to take on Alabama. If you are planning on being with the ESPN GameDay crew, early morning temperatures will be in the mid 20s around daybreak, rising through the 30s, and reaching the 40s by late morning. The kickoff temperature (2:30p CT) will be close to 51 degrees with a mostly sunny sky, but as the sun goes down temperatures will drop quickly into the 40s during the second half.
Auburn will be over in Athens, GA to take on the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday evening (6:15p CT kickoff)… expect 46 degrees at kickoff, with temperatures dropping slowly through the 40s during the game. The sky should be mostly fair.
