Some Rain As The Weekend Begins

AT DAYBREAK: Birmingham is reporting 59 degrees at 5:00 a.m. CT… which is average high for December 5. Needless to say, it will be another warm December day today with temperatures reaching the low 70s in most places this afternoon. The sky will feature more clouds than sun, and while we can’t rule out a shower or two, most of the day will be dry.

WET BEGINNING TO THE WEEKEND: Rain coverage will increase tonight as the short wave west of the state gets closer. We will forecast periods of rain late tonight and tomorrow; at this point for North/Central Alabama it looks like the main window for the more widespread rain will come from about 9:00 tonight through 12:00 noon tomorrow. This doesn’t mean it will rain all nine hours; it will rain at times.

The heavier rain totals will be seen over the Tennessee Valley of far North Alabama; for places like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, and Gadsden we project rain amounts of under 1/2 inch. Some places will see under 1/4 inch. No severe weather risk, and probably very little thunder. The rain will end from west to east early tomorrow afternoon as drier air moves into the state, and the sky will clear tomorrow night. Expect a high in the mid 60s tomorrow.

JACKSONVILLE STATE FOOTBALL: The Gamecocks host Sam Houston State tomorrow at Burgess-Snow Field at 1:00; the sky will be cloudy with some rain possible at times, especially during the first half of the game. Temperatures will be in the mid 60s during the game.

SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: No weather worries with the Alabama/Missouri game played in the Georgia Dome, outside tomorrow in Atlanta the sky will be cloudy with some rain at times; the high will be in the low 60s. Sunday will be dry and a bit cooler with a high between 57 and 60.

Sunday will be a brighter day, with ample sunshine… the weather will be a bit cooler with a high closer to 60; many places north of Birmingham won’t get out of the 50s.

NEXT WEEK: Looks quiet; the last few GFS runs show no rain for Alabama through the week with temperatures near seasonal averages; highs 58-62, lows 38-42. A good supply of sunshine each day.

LONG RANGE: The upper air pattern simply won’t allow any extremely cold, Arctic air down into the Deep South for the next 15 days. Not looking good for those dreaming of a “White Christmas” at this point, but we all know we will have some good cold periods as we get deeper into winter. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
