Rain Today; A Drier Weekend

COOL, WET FRIDAY: Our forecast will highlight periods of rain again today as a broad surface low forms west of the state, and a deep layer of moisture remains over the state. Cooler air at the surface will advect in here from the east today; some East Alabama communities will hold in the 50s all day, with highs in the 60s from Birmingham west. The cooler air means no severe weather threat, and probably no thunder.

We do note SPC has a “marginal” severe weather risk defined today and tonight for much of Mississippi and far Southwest Alabama, around Mobile, where the air will be more unstable. Also, flash flood watches remain in effect near the Mississippi River.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A lingering shower is possible tomorrow morning, but drier air begins to arrive, and we should see some sun breaking through by afternoon with a high up in the low to mid 70s. Sunday looks rain free; partly to mostly sunny with a high also between 72 and 75 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS is trending warmer for Monday; it is now printing a high of 78 degrees for Birmingham with a good supply of sunshine. We stay dry Tuesday with a high in the 70s… the 00Z run hints clouds return Wednesday, and maybe even a touch of light rain could break out over West Alabama with a high back in the 60s. Some scattered light rain is possible Thursday and Friday with a cold front approaching from the north. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more details.

TWENTY TWO YEARS AGO THIS MORNING: Birmingham was buried by 13 inches of snow, with drifts of 5-6 feet as the great Blizzard of 1993 was winding down.
