COLD NIGHTS AHEAD: NWS offices in Birmingham and Huntsville have issued freeze and frost advisories for tonight and tomorrow night as unseasonably cold air settles into the state. Most communities will see a low between 29 and 34 degrees both mornings; colder readings will come over North and East Alabama, but some frost is very possible on the western side of the state as well.

Tomorrow will be very cool with a mix of sun and clouds and a high only around 50 degrees; many places north of Birmingham won’t make it out of the 40s. A disturbance rotating down the back side of the big upper trough over the eastern U.S. could squeeze out a little light rain during the afternoon and evening hours, mainly west of I-65. Rain amounts if any will be very light and spotty.

Sunday will feature a good supply of sunshine; we reach the low to mid 60s Sunday afternoon as a warming trend begins.

NEXT WEEK: A warm front will move northward Monday, and showers are likely, although it won’t rain all day. Then, on Tuesday, just a small risk of a shower with a mix of sun and clouds along with a high in the low 70s. Then, we will mention a chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday, but the good news is that global models continue to back off on the chance of severe weather, now suggesting the main dynamic support will be well north of Alabama. See the blog and the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Tonight will be cold; temperatures will drop into the 40s early tomorrow morning from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores. Look for mostly sunny days and fair nights through Monday; highs will be in the 60s over the weekend, and back in the low 70s Monday. A few widely scattered showers could show up Tuesday and Wednesday, but there will still be some decent intervals of sunshine both days. Showers and storms will be more likely Thursday of next week, but even then it won’t rain all day.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: Twenty people were killed inside the Goshen United Methodist Church in southern Cherokee County on Palm Sunday during a Palm Sunday service. This is part of an ABC 33/40 special that aired in 2004, ten years after the tragedy…
