Occasional Showers Through Friday

| September 9, 2015 @ 6:30 am

RADAR CHECK: We have a few sprinkles over Northeast Alabama as the day begins in the moist environment over Alabama; expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms later today with a high in the mid 80s. The sun will out at times, but expect at least one or two passing showers.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: These two days look relatively wet, with a good chance of showers and storms. The sky will be mostly cloudy, and highs will be generally in the low 80s. While the best chance of rain will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we sure can’t rule out a few late night or morning showers.

COOL ARRIVES THIS WEEKEND: A cold front will pass through early in the weekend; we will hang on to the risk of a few lingering showers Saturday morning, cooler and drier will take over by the afternoon as the best chance of rain shifts down into South Alabama. Sunday could not be better; bright sunshine, lower humidity, and cool temperatures for mid-September. We drop into the mid 50s early Sunday morning, and the high Sunday afternoon will be only in the mid 70s.

The coolest morning will come early Monday; low 50s are likely for places like Birmingham (the GEFS ensemble is printing 51 for Birmingham), but the cooler pockets will drop into the 40s. The last time Birmingham reached the 40s was back on May 22 (when the low was 48). We stay dry Monday and Tuesday; the 12z GFS hints that showers could return as early as Wednesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: You will need to take the rain gear for the high school games tomorrow and Friday night, with a chance of showers and storms statewide. Temperatures will be generally in the 70s.

Alabama hosts Middle Tennessee State at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday afternoon; kickoff is at 3:00. It now looks like the showers will over by kickoff; the sky will become mostly fair during the game, with temperatures falling from the low 80s at kickoff, into the mid 70s by the final whistle.

Auburn plays their first game of the season at Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday against Jacksonville State; kickoff is at 11:00. Showers are possible during the first half of the game, but the second half should be dry. Temperatures will hover around 80 degrees during the game.

TROPICS: Tropical Depression 8 formed last night over the Atlantic east of Bermuda, it will move north, and could become Tropical Storm Henri later today. But, it is not expected to reach hurricane strength, and will curve to the east later this week and is not a threat to the U.S. And, Tropical Depression Grace is barely hanging on; it is expected to dissipate before reaching the Leeward Islands.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 3 to 5 hours of sunshine daily from Gulf Shores east to Panama City Beach through Saturday with a chance of showers and thunderstorms daily. Then, the sky will be mostly sunny Sunday and Monday with lower humidity and no rain. Highs will stay in the 80s, and sea water temperatures are mostly in the mid 80s.
