A Coolish Sunday

| October 11, 2015 @ 7:26 am

Thanks to the cold front that moved through Alabama early yesterday, we’ve waking up to some cooler temperatures with morning lows in the forties across most of the northern half of the state with 50s reported in the southern half. A dense fog advisory was in in effect for the Tennessee Valley counties while fog was patchier in Central Alabama. A few clouds had invaded the state from the east, but those should gradually dissipate during the morning hours. See the video for a graphic of the dew point drop with the frontal passage.

The tropical Atlantic was quiet while only one area of disturbed weather was being carefully watched in the Eastern Pacific with any significant development unlikely to occur.

With drier air in place, it should be a glorious Sunday for Central Alabama with highs in the upper 70s. Monday will be dry, too, for much of the day, however, a fast moving short wave aloft and another cold front at the surface will combine to bring some chance of rain to the area Monday evening into early Tuesday morning. I’ve doubtful that we see much rain with this system thanks to the general lack of much moisture for it to deal with. Precipitable water values will surge upward along and just ahed of the front, but as the QPF graphic shows, showers are likely to be few and far between.

Once that cold front exits the area on Tuesday morning, the upper flow will become northwesterly for the rest of the week and into next weekend. This pattern should keep Central Alabama dry with temperatures close to seasonal values. This means highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s with some upper 40s mixed in on a few mornings.

Another front next weekend could bring another dip in temperatures, but that’s verging on voodoo country so we’ll have to wait and see how that develops.

Looking out into Week 2, the westerlies stay pretty far north for much of the time, however, a strong trough is forecast by the GFS to bring some rain to us around the 26th of October.

James Spann will be back with the next edition of the Weather Xtreme Video on Monday morning. Special thanks to Bill Murray for covering the duties on Saturday while I played hooky with a trip to the Tale Telling’ Festival in Selman. Have a great day, enjoy the cooler weather, and Godspeed.
