Tornado Counts Down

| November 13, 2015 @ 9:45 am

Greg Carbin, Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) at the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), and frequent guest on the WeatherBrains podcast, posted an interesting graphic showing tornado counts for all 50 states with the relationship of that count to the 25-year average.

State counts shown in black are below average while counts shown in red are above that 25-year average. It is interesting to note that the count for Alabama is down by 20. The Alabama count is reflected in tornado counts for just about all of the Southeast US. If you have an interest in weather, this is probably not startling news to you. I think most weather enthusiasts realize that the occurrence of severe weather has been down. I, for one, am certainly glad to see that. And I would certainly not complain if this trend were to continue for several more years.

It’s also interesting to note that only seven (7) states out of 50 have shown an above average number of tornadoes for 2015. These include Hawaii, Maine, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and Illinois. You can almost discount Hawaii, Maine, and Colorado, since their numbers are only 1 or 3 tornadoes above their 25-year average.
