Rain Arrives In Alabama Wednesday

| November 16, 2015 @ 6:26 am

ACTIVE DAY TO THE WEST: A major storm system lifting out of the western states will bring the threat of severe storms to parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and the southern Great Plains today…

But, around here, today will be quiet with a partly sunny sky and a high between 67 and 70 degrees.

TOMORROW: The severe weather risk shifts to the east, including much of East Texas, Louisiana, and South Mississippi during the day. But for us, things stay fairly quiet. The day tomorrow for Alabama will be mild, and becoming windy by late afternoon and tomorrow night. A tight pressure gradient will bring winds (not related to thunderstorms) into the 15-30 mph range tomorrow night, with potential for higher gusts.

A few isolated showers are possible tomorrow afternoon, but most of the day will be dry.

WEDNESDAY: The big band of rain and storms will move into Alabama, but there is no signifiant risk of severe weather for the northern two-thirds of the state with hardly any surface based instability, and poor lapse rates. SPC does define a “marginal” severe weather risk for far South Alabama, as storms there could produce strong, gusty winds, but the overall risk even there looks fairly low.

The rain will be significant Wednesday; most locations will receive around 2 inches of rain, with potential for a little more in a few spots. I don’t think flash flooding will be a big issue, but we will keep an eye on rain rates during the day.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Dry air returns Thursday, and the sky becomes mostly sunny with a high in the low 60s. Friday will feature a sun filled sky and an early morning low near 40 degrees, and a high close to 60. A fine fall day.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be partly sunny with a high in the low 60s; clouds increase Sunday, and a few showers could show up, especially over Southeast Alabama. Nothing too significant, and the high will be in the low 60s Sunday afternoon.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: For now much of the week looks dry with cool days and cold nights; highs in the 50s, and lows well down in the 30s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

Auburn will host Idaho at Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday (also kicking off at 4:00 CT)… a fair sky with 60 degrees at kickoff, and temperatures close to 50 degrees by the end of the game.
