Active Weather To The West

| November 16, 2015 @ 3:22 pm

THIS AFTERNOON: A fairly quiet day across the great state of Alabama; a partly sunny sky with temperatures generally between 67 and 70 degrees. Nothing on the radar around here.

But, to the west, the weather is getting very active, with severe storms likely over parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, with blizzard conditions developing tonight around Denver.

TOMORROW: The risk of severe weather will shift east; higher severe weather probabilities are over Louisiana and parts of South Mississippi.

There is a “marginal” severe weather risk into far West Alabama late tomorrow night (after midnight), but the storms should be weakening by then as they move into a more stable environment.

What we do expect here tomorrow night are strong, gusty winds, not related to thunderstorms. A tight pressure gradient between low pressure to the west, and high pressure to the east, will bring south winds of 15-30 mph tomorrow night, with gusts to 35 mph.

WEDNESDAY: The main band of storms moves through Wednesday. The air over the northern two-thirds of the state should be cool and stable, and SPC has defined a “marginal” severe weather risk Wednesday only for far South Alabama, including places like Gulf Shores, Florala, Geneva, and Dothan. It will be a good soaking; rain amounts of 2 inches are likely. We note flash flood watches are in effect for most states west of Alabama; at the moment it looks like there won’t be enough rain for flooding issues here Wednesday. Still, it promises to be a good soaking.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Dry air returns Thursday; the sky becomes mostly sunny with a high in the mid to upper 60s. Friday looks pleasant; a low near 45 a high near 67, and a mostly sunny sky. Another great night for the high school football playoff games Friday night with clear and chilly conditions.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A cold front will push through the state in dry fashion Saturday; north winds will increase, gusting to 25 mph in the wake of the front. The day will be partly to mostly sunny with a high around 60. Then, we expect freezing temperatures early Sunday as the cold air settles in and the wind dies down. Sunday will be sunny but very cool with a high in the low 50s along with with a good supply of sunshine.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: At the moment, it looks like the week will be generally dry and cold with highs in the 50s, and lows in the 30s; those values are below average for late November in Alabama. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
