Warmer Temperatures Later This Week

| January 5, 2016 @ 3:10 pm

CHILLY WINTER DAY: Hard to find a cloud in the Alabama sky this afternoon; temperatures are generally in the 40s. We are forecasting another freeze tonight, with most locations reaching the mid to upper 20s early tomorrow.

Temperatures begin to trend upward tomorrow afternoon with low 50s likely; the weather stays dry with a partly sunny sky.

NEXT RAIN: The sky becomes cloudy Thursday, and rain will return to the state late in the day and into Thursday night. Seems like the main window for rain comes from about 4:00 p.m. Thursday through 4:00 a.m. Friday. No severe weather, no flooding, probably no thunder, and rain amounts should be under 1/2 inch.

The warming trend continues Friday; clouds linger much of the day, but we reach the 62-65 degree range by afternoon. It should be the warmest day out of the next seven days.

WET AT TIMES OVER THE WEEKEND: The next wave will bring more rain to Alabama; the rain will begin during the day Saturday. We will maintain the chance of some rain at times into Saturday night and Sunday. Saturday will be relatively mild with a high in the low 60s, but much colder air begins to pour into the state Sunday with temperatures falling through the 40s during the day along with a brisk north wind. Sunday looks like a raw, cold, damp day.

NEXT WEEK: Sure looks like Monday will be coldest day so far this winter. I really don’t think we get out of the 30s despite a decent amount of sun. Temperatures should be well down in the 20s Monday and Tuesday morning, and colder spots should reach the upper teens. Cold air will be the story through the weekend, and for now the global models don’t show any evidence of winter weather mischief. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Saturday, Jacksonville State plays North Dakota State for the FCS National Championship Saturday in Frisco, Texas (north of Dallas; 11:00a CT kickoff). There will be cloudy periods during the game, but for now it looks like a small risk of a shower. Temperatures will rise from 44 degrees at kickoff, to near 47 by the final whistle.

The FBS National Championship game, Alabama vs Clemson, is Monday at Glendale, Arizona (7:30p CT kickoff). Despite a good bit of rain for Phoenix this week, the weather looks cool and dry for the game with temperatures falling from the low 50s at kickoff, into the upper 40s by the second half.
