Dry Weather Through Thursday

| January 11, 2016 @ 3:04 pm

SUNNY BUT COLD: Temperatures are generally in the low to mid 40s across North/Central Alabama this afternoon with a mostly sunny sky, but we are seeing only upper 30s up in the Tennessee Valley of far North Alabama. Tonight will feature another freeze, but it won’t be as cold as last night. We project a low in the mid to upper 20s for most early tomorrow, but colder pockets will go down toward 20 degrees.

We note the coldest spot in Alabama this morning, as best we can determine, was Addison with 11 degrees.

TOMORROW THROUGH THURSDAY: The weather stays dry. We reach the low 50s tomorrow with a good supply of sunshine, but Wednesday will be a bit colder, with highs back in the mid to upper 40s thanks to a secondary surge of cold air arriving tomorrow night. Then, it looks like Thursday could feature the warmest afternoon of the week with a high close to 60 degrees.

The low early Wednesday will be in the 20s, followed by low to mid 30s Thursday morning.

FRIDAY: A surface low will pass north of the state, and a few periods of rain are likely during the day. Some thunder is not out of the question, but no severe weather is expected. Rain amounts Friday should be under 1/2 inch, and the high will be in the 55-60 degree range.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The weather trends colder again; the high Saturday will drop into the 40s, and a few North Alabama communities could hold in the 30s Sunday. Looks like a generally dry weekend, although a tough of drizzle, or a few flurries are possible near the Tennessee border in the cold air advection pattern. Nothing significant and no impact.

NEXT WEEK: Temperatures remain below average for the first half of the week; the GFS shows a disturbance with potential for some precipitation west of the state Tuesday, but that feature dampens out and really doesn’t have any impact on Alabama, and the European model (the ECMWF) shows no precipitation for any part of the Gulf Coast states. Bottom line is that for now the weather looks pretty quiet; see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
