Rain Returns To Alabama Friday

| January 12, 2016 @ 5:56 am

A LITTLE WARMER THIS AFTERNOON: Most places are below freezing across North/Central Alabama this morning, but we should rise into the low 50s this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine through scattered high clouds. Then, a dry cold front passes through late tonight, and tomorrow will be dry, but a few degrees colder thanks to a secondary push of Arctic air. The high tomorrow will be in the 47-50 degree range for most communities.

Thursday will be the warmest day of the week with a high around 60 degrees, and again we stay dry with a partly sunny sky.

RAIN RETURNS FRIDAY: A surface low will move across Alabama Friday, and we will forecast periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm. No severe weather, and rain amounts should be in the 1/2 inch range around here, with potential for heavier totals near the Gulf Coast. Our high Friday will be in the 50s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The weather trends colder. Expect lingering clouds Saturday, and maybe a touch of drizzle, but most of the day will be dry. Then, Sunday will feature a mix of sun and clouds. Temperatures won’t get out of the 40s both days.

NEXT WEEK: Dry weather continues Monday with a high close to 50 degrees, but a pretty good surge of Arctic air arrives Tuesday, and some places north of Birmingham could hold in the 30s all day. The GFS is advertising a weak wave with potential for a little light rain here, and some light wintry precipitation for far North Alabama, but the European model is bone dry and we will stick with that solution since the model has a much better track record this season.

Cold, dry weather continues Wednesday, followed by a warming trend, and a good chance of rain at the end of the week. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
