Strong Storms Approaching Several Counties in Central Parts of the Area

As of 3:47 pm, we have two waves of storms moving into and across portions of North/Central Alabama this afternoon, some of which has caused the National Weather Service office in both Birmingham and Huntsville to issue significant weather advisories for the threat of gusty winds of 40-50 mph.

For Central Alabama, portions of these counties are under an advisory for the storms moving northeastward up from the southern parts of the area: Talladega, Chilton, Shelby, Bibb, Jefferson, Coosa, and Clay. This cluster of storms was moving to the northeast at 55 mph and will affect the following cities shortly: Southern Birmingham, Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Alabaster, Bessemer, Homewood, Pelham, Mountain Brook, Helena, Sylacauga, Calera, Chelsea, Montevallo, Childersburg, Columbiana, Jemison, Ashland, Wilsonville, Talladega Springs, and Weogufka.

The second cluster of storms is pushing into the northwestern parts of the area and advisories have been issued for portions of Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin counties. gusty wind up to 50 mph will be possible with these storms and the cities that will be affected are Waterloo, Riverton, Wright, Threet, Red Bay, Vina, Hodges, Pleasant Site, Pogo, Mynot, Atwood, Dempsey, Little Bear Creek Reservoir and Halltown.

Gusty winds are not the only threat with these storms… Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches with locally higher amounts will be possible through tonight across portions of Western and Central
Alabama. This may cause minor flooding of poor drainage areas with isolated flash flooding also possible.
