Dry Days Ahead; Heating Up

COMFORTABLE LATE MAY DAY: The temperature at Birmingham at 2:00 this afternoon was only 78 degrees… five degrees below average for May 22. Radar shows little rain across the state, although over the northeast corner over Jackson County.
We will hang on to just a slight risk of a shower through the evening hours for far East Alabama, but most of Alabama will remain dry tonight. Most places will wind up somewhere between 55 and 60 degrees early tomorrow… pretty refreshing for the week before Memorial Day weekend.
HOTTER WEATHER AHEAD: Don’t get used to the pleasant temperatures as our weather will heat up in the days ahead thanks to an upper air high, that will take the place of the upper trough passing through today. Tomorrow will still be pretty comfortable; the high will be in the mid 80s with low dewpoints (maybe dropping into the upper 40s during the day). But, we hit 90 on Thursday, followed by low 90s on Friday. The weather will be dry with sunny days and fair nights.
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Hot and dry weather continues with a 5880 meter 500 mb upper high right on top of us. Highs will be in the 90 to 94 degree range, and humidity levels will be up as well making it feel like summer. We might consider some mention of isolated afternoon showers or storms on Monday as the upper ridge begins to break down, but widespread rain is not expected for sure.
The door will be open for a better chance of scattered showers and storms by the middle part of next week as heights continue to drop a bit.
BEACH TRIP: I expect many of you are headed to the Gulf Coast in coming days with school letting out. The weather looks simply excellent from Panama City west to Gulf Shores through the holiday weekend, with sunny days and fair nights. Highs will be in the 80s, and the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 83 degrees.
TOPIC: TROPICS: Tropical depression Alberto, as expected, fizzled out this morning and is no longer on the board. We do note a large area of disturbed weather over the Caribbean… and deep tropical moisture over South Florida where some parts of Miami have received over 5 inches of rain today. Nothing organized for now.

I enjoyed speaking at the 6th grade graduation today at Parrish Elementary School in Walker County… hard to believe the school year is over. Seems like it just started yesterday. As they say…. when it comes to raising kids, the days are long, but the years are short.
