RADAR CHECK: So far today showers and storms are few and far between across Alabama…

The sky is partly sunny, and temperatures are generally in the low 90s. Widely scattered showers and storms will end later this evening.

Not much change tomorrow; morning sunshine, then showers and storms will form by afternoon in random, scattered places. The high will be back in the low 90s.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: The upper ridge weakens a bit, and the air becomes a little more unstable. Scattered showers and storms should be a little more numerous both days, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. Days will feature a mix of sun and clouds with highs between 87 and 90 degrees for most places.

THE WEEKEND: A moist, unstable airmass will remain parked over Alabama. Expect intervals of sunshine Saturday and Sunday with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms both days; highs will be generally in the upper 80s, which is below average for mid-August in Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS tries to bring some drier air down into North Alabama by Tuesday night and Wednesday. Remember, fronts rarely make it that far south in August, and I will believe it when I see it. But, if by chance it verifies, that could mean slightly cooler nights and lower humidity by the middle of next week. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details…

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day from Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach, with just a few widely scattered showers and storms round. Highs on the immediate coast 87-90, with low 90s inland. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

TROPICS: The tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic is expected to become a tropical depression soon; if it becomes a tropical storm the name will be “Fiona”. It will gain latitude, and is not expected to reach hurricane strength, and is not expected to impact any landmass.

Another wave is emerging off the coast of Africa that bears watching… the rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
