Strong To Severe Storms Possible Tomorrow

THIS AFTERNOON: Radar shows most of the rain in Alabama now south of a line from Roanoke to Montgomery to Camden… we are even getting some decent breaks in the cloud cover to the north with sunshine over the Birmingham metro at 2:30. But, don’t get used to that sun…

ACTIVE DAY TOMORROW: More short wave energy will impact our state tomorrow, and with surface temperatures rising into the low 70s, and dew points into the low 60s, that will create some pretty decent instability, and set the stage for chance of strong to severe storms tomorrow afternoon into the evening hours. The 12Z NAM/RPM runs actually look a little less impressive for severe weather, but they could very well be underestimating the about of shear and instability available.

The best chance of severe storms in Alabama will be generally west of I-65, from roughly 12:00 noon until 8:00 p.m. SPC maintains their standard “slight risk” of severe weather for much of North and West Alabama. This is the tail end of our fall tornado season, and we encourage everybody to be in a position to hear severe weather warnings tomorrow in the event they are needed. The storms will move out of the state tomorrow night… see the Weather Xtreme video for more details.

FRIDAY: We will have a break in the action, and the weather will be a little cooler with a high in the 57-61 degree range. We might see a few intervals of sunshine, and there is just a slight risk of a shower during the day.

WET CHRISTMAS: Yet another short wave will bring rain back into Alabama over the Christmas weekend. The 12Z model runs continue to show the main chance of rain late Saturday afternoon, Saturday night, and into Christmas morning. The air will be stable with highs in the 50s, so no severe weather worries. Rain amounts with this feature should be around 1/2 inch for most Alabama communities, with heavier totals over South Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS is dry Monday through Wednesday, with seasonal temperatures. Highs in the 50s, lows in the 30s. A wave in the Gulf could bring some rain up into Alabama Tuesday, but recent GFS runs have suppressed this to the south.

LONG RANGE: And, no sign of any really cold air for Alabama into the first week of the New Year. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will have a mid-week special tonight… it will be on iTunes and the web next week, but you can listen live tonight via uStream here.
