ANOTHER WARM DECEMBER DAY: The GFS and the NAM models are printing a high of 73 degrees today for Birmingham; if we reach that, it will be 14 degrees above the average high of 59, and within five degrees of the record high for December 4, 78 set in 1998.

A few isolated showers have popped up this morning across North/Central Alabama, but overall today will be dry with a mix of sun and clouds.

We go back into the low 70s tomorrow, but the sky will become mostly cloudy, and we will mention a small risk of afternoon shower. Showers are more likely tomorrow night and during the day Saturday; the main window for the more widespread rain comes after midnight tomorrow night, although we can’t rule out a shower or two before midnight.

THE WEEKEND: A few periods of rain are likely Saturday, with the best coverage along and north of I-20. Rain south of I-20 will be pretty light and spotty, and much of the day will be dry there. Over North Alabama, rain amounts should be generally under 1/2 inch. It won’t rain all day, and I doubt if we hear much thunder. Certainly no risk of severe weather. Just be aware if you have some outdoor plans, it will rain at times. The day will be cloudy with a high in the upper 60s; 70s are likely over South Alabama.

Rain will end Saturday evening, and dry air returns Sunday as the sky becomes partly to mostly sunny. Sunday will be a bit cooler with a high between 60 and 65 degrees.

SEC CHAMPIONSHIP: Needless to say, rain won’t be an issue for the Alabama/Missouri game inside the Georgia Dome in Atlanta Saturday, but outside some rain is likely at times during the day with a high in the low 60s. Drier air returns to Georgia Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be a bit cooler with highs dropping back into the 50s, and lows in the 30s, which is at average values for mid-December in Alabama. We might consider a small risk of a shower late in the week, but for now it doesn’t look like a big rain event. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
