TEMPERATURES REMAIN BELOW AVERAGE: The average high for December 9 (in Birmingham) is 57 degrees; we are projecting low to mid 50s today despite a mostly sunny sky. As the pressure gradient tightens, we expect a north wind of 10-20 mph this afternoon, which will make it feel cooler.

Tomorrow will be about 5-10 degrees colder, but the sky will remain mostly sunny as dry air holds. The high tomorrow afternoon for most will be in the upper 40s, and our coldest morning should come early Thursday with the low will be in the 26-30 degree range. Then, during the day Thursday, expect another sunny and cool day with a high close to the 50 degree mark.

WARMING TREND: Alabama’s weather will stay dry Friday and through the weekend with warmer afternoons; the high Friday will be somewhere between 57 and 60, and a good chance we enjoy low 60s Saturday and Sunday. Dry air stays in place, we so we expect mostly sunny days and clear nights.

NEXT WEEK: The last few runs of the GFS model have shown a weaker and faster system impacting Alabama early in the week; looks like the main window for showers will come late Monday afternoon and Monday night, with drier air moving back in Tuesday. Suggested QPF is under 1/2 inch for North/Central Alabama. But, let’s remember the last weather system ( this past Friday night and early Saturday) greatly overperformed model guidance, so we will keep an eye on it. One way or another it certainly doesn’t look like a severe weather threat.

CHRISTMAS? Long time readers know there is very little skill in a specific weather forecast beyond seven days, but we can often gather ideas about trends in the 7 to 15 day period. Still no sign of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) or the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) flipping negative for now, and it looks like temperatures will be close to average values. Doesn’t bode well for those dreaming of a White Christmas. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
