Dry And Cool Through Mid-Week

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

DRIER AIR RETURNS TO ALABAMA: Showers this morning are now generally east of I-65, and south of I-85, with a clearing sky over the northern half of the state.  We project a partly sunny sky today and tomorrow with highs in the 50s, right at seasonal averages for mid-December in Alabama. Moisture levels begins to rise Thursday, and we will bring in a small risk of a shower, but much of the day should be dry.

NEXT RAIN EVENT: It comes as the weekend begins. A fairly vigorous wave will push rain in Alabama Friday afternoon, becoming widespread Friday night into Saturday morning. The latest GFS moves the surface low through South Alabama, meaning no severe weather worries for the northern two-thirds of the state. But, it should be a good rain event with amounts around one inch likely; some spots could see a little more. The rain will end from west to east during the midday hours Saturday, followed by drier air Saturday night and Sunday. Highs stay in the 50s over the weekend.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: The weather here looks pretty quiet for now. A cold front will pass through Tuesday night or early Wednesday (December 23-24), and that might bring a shower or two, but at this moment it doesn’t look like a big rain event. Most of Christmas Eve looks dry, but chilly with a high in the mid to upper 40s. And, Christmas Day on Thursday (December 25) looks dry with a high in the 50s. Sorry, snow fans. See the Weather Xtreme video for a day to day walk through of the weather we expect next week.

It does look like the southern stream will be pretty active over the last week of the month; the 06Z GFS shows a significant rain/storm event here around December 27.
