SUNNY WINTER DAY: It has been a day of maximum sunshine across Alabama today; temperatures are mostly in the mid 50s this afternoon, right at average values for late January.

Clouds will increase across the state tomorrow with a clipper passing to the north, dragging a cold front through here tomorrow night. Ahead of the front, temperatures should reach the low 60s. A few showers will break out during the afternoon and nighttime hours, but they will be widely scattered and rain amounts will be light.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: These two days will be cool and dry; lots of sunshine Friday with a high in the low 50s, followed by a partly sunny day on Saturday with mid 50s. Saturday morning will be cold with a low in the 27-32 degree range.

SUNDAY: Clouds will thicken across the state Saturday night, and wet weather returns to Alabama Sunday. Curiously, the 12Z GFS run is drier, but I expect a pretty good rain event state wide with periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm or two as a surface low passes northwest of Alabama. Rain amounts of around inch are likely.

NEXT WEEK: Colder and drier air returns Monday; a few lingering snow flurries are possible early Monday morning over the northern third of the state with little or no impact. The sky will clear during the day with a steady north breeze and a high in the 40s. Tuesday looks cold and dry with a high near 50 degrees.

Later in the week, a southern stream system promises to bring more rain to the state by Wednesday or Thursday, and the GFS is hinting at some risk of winter weather mischief for parts of the Deep South toward the end of the week. Needless to say, there is no way to resolve details at this stage of the game; just something to watch for now. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
