Rising Moisture Levels Later This Week

SUNNY MAY DAY: As expected, this has been a delightful day across the northern two-thirds of Alabama with ample sunshine, low humidity, and afternoon temperatures around 80 degrees, right at seasonal levels for the middle of May. Dewpoints are in the 40s in most places, meaning the air is very dry. It might be sometime this fall before we see similar dewpoints.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Moist air begins to return tomorrow, but a decent part of the day will be dry. With a partly sunny sky, we rise into the mid 80s, and a few widely scattered showers or storms will show up by mid to late afternoon, with the higher coverage south of I-20.

Then, on Friday, a moist airmass will be in place, but there is not much dynamic forcing/upward motion, so while there is certainly a decent chance of showers and thunderstorms, there will be some very nice breaks in the rain, and the sun might peek out at times. The high Friday afternoon will be in the 77 to 80 degree range.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Pretty much the same situation Saturday and Sunday. Warm, humid days, and the chance of showers and storms Saturday and Sunday, but a not a “wash out” situation. Expect about one to two hours each day, and while some thunder is certainly possible, severe storms are not expected. A few intervals of sunshine are possible, and highs over the weekend will be close to 80 degrees.

For everything outdoors this weekend, the Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek, the AHSAA state baseball championship games in Montgomery, and the Hangout Music Festival at Gulf Shores, just be aware a few rain delays will be possible at each venue, but you will get in some good golf, baseball, and concerts.

NEXT WEEK: Scattered showers and thunderstorms remain possible Monday and Tuesday… but the latest GFS run brings dry air down into Alabama Wednesday. Not totally convinced it happens, but it is possible. And, no severe weather threats for Alabama for at least the next 10 days, and maybe even until the fall as the upper ridge holds. Our spring tornado season ends May 31.
