Showers Return Before The Weekend Gets Here

| May 13, 2015 @ 6:32 am

PLEASANT MORNING: Temperatures are mostly in the mid to upper 50s across the northern half of Alabama this morning, and the air is dry. We project a good supply of sunshine today, with low humidity and a high around 80 degrees, right at seasonal averages.

TOMORROW: Moisture begins to return, but I get the idea a pretty good part of the day will be dry. We will forecast a partly sunny sky, with just a few widely scattered afternoon showers; the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in five… the high will be up in the mid 80s.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Moisture levels rise; precipitable water values approach 2 inches on these three days. This means we will be dodging occasional showers and thunderstorms with generally cloudy conditions; the high will be close to 80 degrees each afternoon.

We have many outdoor activities going on, including the Regions Tradition golf tournament at Shoal Creek, the Alabama state baseball championships in Montgomery, and the Hangout Music Festival at Gulf Shores. The showers and storms at all of these venues will be rather random, so there is no way to give specific start/stop times for the rain, but you will just need to be ready for a shower or storm at pretty much any hour of the day or night. The higher coverage of rain should come during the afternoon and evening hours.

On the positive side, there will be some very good breaks in the rain, the sun might peek out at times, and there is no risk of severe weather in our state.

NEXT WEEK: Moist air lingers; it gets harder and harder to get good cold front passages around here in late May. We will have some risk of scattered showers and storms on a daily basis through much of the week; see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Expect a mix of sun and clouds today and tomorrow along the coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores, with a few widely scattered showers or storms. Then, showers become more numerous Friday through the weekend with about 2 to 4 hours of sunshine daily. Highs on the immediate coast will be around 80 degrees, and the sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 80 degrees.
