A Touch Of Fall Tonight

| August 12, 2015 @ 3:32 pm

FINE AUGUST AFTERNOON: As expected, temperatures are mostly in the upper 80s and low 90s this afternoon, but dew points have dropped down into the 57-62 degree range. At 2:00 p.m. CT… Birmingham reported 88 degrees with a dew point of 59, making the relative humidity 37 percent. We also have a fresh north breeze gusting to 21 mph.

Temperatures

We will enjoy a nice fall preview tonight; lows for most communities across North/Central Alabama will be in the 61-65 degree range, but some of the cooler spots could very well visit the upper 50s. The sky will be clear, perfect viewing for the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Best time to watch the sky will come from midnight to 5:00 a.m.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: We stay in a dry, continental airmass tomorrow, so it will be another sunny day with low humidity, and a high between 88 and 91 degrees for most places. Then, on Friday, moisture levels rise a bit, and we will mention the risk of a few widely scattered afternoon showers or thunderstorms.

THE WEEKEND: A weak upper low will begin to form across the Deep South, so we will need to mention scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday, mostly during the afternoon/evening hours, but we should also see a decent amount of sunshine both days with a high around 90.

NEXT WEEK: Scattered showers and storms should become more numerous early in the week as the upper low hangs around, and the cold air aloft associated with the feature makes the air unstable. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Still looking at about 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day on the Gulf Coast from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores through the weekend; always the risk of a passing storm at times. Storms could be a little more active down there early next week. Highs on the coast will be in the upper 80s, with low 90s inland. Sea water temperatures are mostly in the mid 80s.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains very quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.
