Alabama 811 | Know What's Below.

Only Isolated Showers This Afternoon

| September 7, 2015 @ 7:02 am

HAPPY LABOR DAY: It is a quiet Monday morning across the great state of Alabama; nothing on radar and temperatures are in the upper 60s and low 70s. Vic Bell up at Black Creek, near Gadsden, is the cool spot with a pleasant 62 degrees. Sunrise image below is from Lake Guntersville early this morning from @senphilwilliams…

We expect a partly sunny sky today with only isolated showers or storms this afternoon; chance of any one spot getting wet later today is 20 percent or less.

REST OF THE WEEK: Temperatures trend downward, and rain chances trend upward. Temperatures aloft will be colder, making the air more unstable, and moisture levels will be increasing. This means scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis tomorrow through Friday. Along the way there will be a few decent intervals of sunshine, however, as the rain won’t be continuous. Afternoon highs will drop back into the low to mid 80s most afternoons.

While the best chance of showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we can’t rule out a late night or morning shower.

THE WEEKEND: A cold front will approach North Alabama Saturday, so we will need to mention a pretty good chance of showers and storms as the weekend begins; then we start to trend drier Sunday with the best coverage of showers shifting down into the southern half of the state. Highs over the weekend will remain in the low to mid 80s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama hosts Middle Tennessee State at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday afternoon; kickoff is at 3:00. I would take rain gear since there is the chance of a few showers, and maybe even a thunderstorm during the game. Temperatures will fall from near 83 at kickoff into the upper 70s by the final whistle.

Auburn plays their first game of the season at Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday against Jacksonville State; kickoff is at 11:00. The sky will be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers; temperatures will hover in the low 80s during the game.

A decent chance we enjoy some cooler, continental air by early next week with lows in the 50s in many places. Temperature trends make us wonder if we have seen the last 90 degree day of 2015. No guarantee, but a distinct possibility…

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Grace is in the Atlantic, between Africa and the Lesser Antilles, moving west with estimated winds of 50 mph. It is expected to weaken, and possibly dissipate, before reaching the Leeward Islands due to dry air and wind shear.
