Storms Tonight; Cool Weekend Ahead

| September 11, 2015 @ 6:26 am

FOGGY START: A dense fog advisory is in effect for much of North/Central Alabama this morning; that fog will burn off by 9:00 in most spots, and the day ahead will be partly sunny and warm with only a small risk of a shower. Temperatures will reach the mid to upper 80s this afternoon.

COLD FRONT TONIGHT: A band of showers and thunderstorms will move through the state tonight ahead of a cold front, that is near St. Louis this morning. The storms should enter far North Alabama around 6:00… then moving southward, reaching Birmingham around 9:00 p.m. Organized severe weather is not expected, but the heavier storms will produce gusty winds, heavy rain, and a good bit of lightning.

THE WEEKEND: Models are pushing the rain out of here pretty early tomorrow morning, and the rest of the weekend will be just delightful with lower humidity, cool nights, and sunny days. Highs drop into the 70s tomorrow and Sunday, and the low early Sunday morning will be in the 50 to 55 degree range for most places.

NEXT WEEK: We still expect colder valleys across North/Central Alabama to reach the 40s early Monday… most communities will enjoy a low in the lower 50s. Sunny weather will continue Monday and Tuesday with highs back in the 80s. We will still mention some risk of showers Wednesday and Thursday, but the 06Z GFS is trending drier on these days for the northern half of Alabama. FOOTBALL WEATHER: Unfortunately showers and thunderstorms are a good possibility tonight for the high school games, especially north of Birmingham. South of I-20, there is a chance the games will be completed before the thunderstorms arrive. Temperatures will be in the 70s.

Alabama hosts Middle Tennessee State at Bryant-Denny Stadium tomorrow afternoon; kickoff is at 3:00. The sky will be partly to mostly sunny during the game, with temperatures falling from the upper 70s at kickoff, into the upper 60s by the final whistle along with a north breeze of 10-20 mph.

Auburn plays their first home game of the season at Jordan-Hare Stadium tomorrow against Jacksonville State; kickoff is at 11:00. The good news is that models are trending drier, hinting the showers could push south of Lee County by game time. But, for now will hold on to the chance of a shower during the first half of the game. Temperatures will hover in the mid to upper 70s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Henri has sustained winds of 40 mph northeast of Bermuda; it is moving north and is no threat to the U.S. A new wave has emerged off the coast of Africa in the far eastern Atlantic, some slow development is possible in coming days as it moves to the west/northwest.

AT THE BEACH: About 5 to 7 hours of sunshine today and tomorrow on the coast from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Then, sunny weather Sunday through Tuesday. Highs will be in the 80s, and sea water temperatures are holding in the mid 80s.
