We currently have a mix of sun and clouds across North/Central Alabama at this time, with temperatures on their way up into the 80s for the afternoon highs. The only rain showing up in the state is located down in Washington County in the southwestern corner of the state. These showers are moving to the north-northeast, and will be moving into Clarke and Choctaw Counties shortly.

A strong surface low is located up on the Canadian border of North Dakota. An occluded front is stretching around the top of the low and makes it way down to the south through Minnesota, Iowa, extreme southeastern tip of Nebraska, and down into Kansas. Moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms are line up along and just ahead of that front. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have been issued for a few counties in Missouri for winds of 60 MPH or more, and for hail up to half-dollar size.

A stationary front is located from the southern tip of the occluded front in Kansas, and stretches to the east through Missouri, Southwestern Kentucky, Northeastern Tennessee, North Carolina, and the extreme southeastern part of Virginia. Heavy rain and thunderstorms have fired up over the front in Kentucky and Tennessee. Nothing severe at this time, but Flash Flood Warnings have been issued for several counties along that line of storms.

QUICK LOOK AT TEMPERATURES: Most communities are well up into the 70s, with the warm spot in the state being Mobile at 81. Here is a list of temperature readings from across the state at this time:

Birmingham 75
Tuscaloosa 73
Muscle Shoals 79
Huntsville 79
Anniston 77
Alexander City 75
Montgomery 79
Dothan 78
Mobile 81

REST OF TODAY: Expect much of the same for the rest of the day. A mix of sun and clouds, with the air feeling a little muggy today due to higher humidity levels. A shower is possible, but most communities in the area will remain dry. Afternoon highs will be in the mid 80s.

THURSDAY: A shower is possible during the day, but not especially likely, and we rise well into the 80s. A cold front will approach tomorrow night with a better chance of a showers or storms; SPC maintains a “marginal risk” of severe storms for about the northern quarter of the state…

A few storms tomorrow night could produce small hail and gusty winds, but the overall threat looks pretty low with the main upper support to the north and marginal wind fields. And, it sure looks like the showers and storms will fizzle out as they move southward, and many places in North/Central Alabama won’t see much rain at all.

HEADED TO THE BEACH: Warm and dry again today with a good supply of sunshine, but a few scattered showers and storms are possible tomorrow from Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach. Then, expect mostly sunny days and clear nights over the weekend and early next week. Highs will be around 80 on the immediate coast, with mid 80s inland. The sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 75 degrees. See a very detailed beach forecast here.

THE REGIONS TRADITION: The Regions Tradition will be held this year at the Greystone Golf and Country Club May 18-22… a very preliminary look suggests there will be some risk of showers Wednesday through Friday (May 18-20), followed by a mostly dry weekend (May 21-22). Highs will be in the 80s. Find out more information and purchase your tickets here.
