Drought Conditions Worsen Across Alabama

| October 7, 2016 @ 3:20 pm

DRY DRY DRY: Today is the 19th consecutive day with no measurable rain for Birmingham, and the chance of rain for the next 7 to 10 days remains pretty much zero. So, drought conditions will continue to worsen across Alabama. Conserve water, and be extremely careful with any outdoor burning.

This is output from the GFS model showing potential rain for the next 10 days…

So… we forecast sunny days and fair nights through all of next week. Highs in the low 80s tomorrow and Sunday, then in the 76-80 degree range for much of next week. A good chance we dip into the cool 40s by Monday and Tuesday morning.

We should note tomorrow will be a rather windy day with north winds of 12-25 mph.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Another delightful night for high school football games tonight… clear with temperatures falling through the 60s.

Auburn will play at Mississippi State tomorrow (11:00a CT kickoff)… the sky will be sunny with temperatures rising from 78 at kickoff, to near 85 degrees by the fourth quarter.

Alabama is also on the road; they play Arkansas at Fayetteville tomorrow evening (6:00p CT kickoff)… a perfect evening for football with temperatures falling from 67 at kickoff into the 50s by the fourth quarter. The sky will be clear.

BARBER VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE FESTIVAL: This event runs through Sunday at the Barber Motorsports Park. Highs in the low 80s tomorrow and Sunday. Sunny days, clear nights. Get ticket information right here.

AT THE BEACH: Sunny days, clear nights on the coast from Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach through next week; highs mostly in the 80s. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

NICOLE: This tropical storm between Puerto Rico and Bermuda will move little over the weekend, but there is a chance it moves northward toward Bermuda by the middle of next week. No threat to the U.S.

MATTHEW: Sustained winds are now at 115 mph; the hurricane is southeast of Jacksonville as it continues to parallel the coast…

Major beach erosion and storm flooding is in progress on the upper Atlantic coast of Florida, some roads have been washed away around Flagler Beach. Matthew will continue to parallel the coast; some chance it makes landfall on the South Carolina coast tomorrow, but it will not be a “major hurricane” at that point (it will be category one or two). Hurricane warnings remain in effect up through the southern part of the North Carolina coast.

A loop is likely off the coast early next week; looks like it will wind up in the northern Bahamas by the middle of next week as a weak tropical depression. Very low odds this gets into the Gulf of Mexico and becomes a problem beyond that.
