Much Cooler Later This Week

| October 31, 2016 @ 6:37 pm

RECORD WATCH: Based on the hourly data, Birmingham’s high so far today is 86 degrees… one degree shy of the record for October 31, 87 set in 1984. But there is still time to creep up to tie that record, or even break it with a strong autumn sun and very dry air.

LATE UPDATE: Birmingham’s official high was 87 degrees… so we tied the 1984 record today…

temperatures

Today is the 43rd consecutive day without rain for Birmingham; the record streak is 52 days set in 1924. Model data is showing little chance of significant rain for the next seven days, and drought conditions will continue to worsen.

Here is data released by the Birmingham Water Works Board today:

Inland Lake is at 77.8% of capacity
Lake Purdy is at 28.8:% of capacity

Raw Water delivery
Mulberry (Warrior River) 37.48%
Inland Lake 29.02%
Cahaba (Lake Purdy) 22.58%
Sipsey (Smith Lake) 16.92%

REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow will be another dry and very warm day with a high in the mid to upper 80s; the high Wednesday will drop into the low 80s with a good supply of sunshine through scattered clouds.

A cold front will pass through the state late Thursday and Thursday night, and we will mention a small risk of a shower, but nothing widespread or beneficial. Then, a big cool down is ahead with a high dropping to near 80 degrees.

THE WEEKEND: Sunny pleasant days, clear cool nights. Highs in the 70s, lows in the 40s. Perfect fall weather except for the fact that the drought will worsen.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For round one of the high school playoff games Friday night, the weather will be clear and very cool with temperatures falling into the 50s. You will need a jacket.

Auburn will host Vanderbilt Saturday (11a CT kickoff)… it will be a perfect day for football with a sunny sky… temperatures will climb from 68 at kickoff, to near 72 by the fourth quarter.

Alabama will be on the road; they play LSU Saturday night (7p CT kickoff)… the sky will be clear with temperatures falling through the 60s. A great night for football.

NEXT WEEK: Temperatures will be very pleasant, but rain chances are very “iffy”. A wave coming out of Texas should bring a chance of rain to Alabama late in the week, but model consistency is not good, as you might expect beyond seven days.
