I Can See Some Blue Skies And A Golden Globe Of Light At Midday

Warmer With Some Sun At Midday
As I look out of my window at this midday hour, I can see something that I haven’t seen in at least four days… blue skies. Some of you are probably saying the same thing, but unfortunately most are probably not. There are some clouds hanging tough across parts of Central Alabama, and we still have some mid-level clouds spreading eastward from Mississippi. With how long the fog held on this morning across the valleys in the northeast and the Alabama River basin near Montgomery, combined with this cloud cover, the rise in temperatures could be slowed and we may have to back off of the high temperatures.

For the remainder of the day, you can expect a mix of sun and clouds throughout the afternoon, with cloud cover building during the evening and overnight hours. We may have some fog forming tonight, so be careful driving if you’re out during the overnight and pre-dawn hours. Afternoon highs will be in the mid 50s to low 60s across Central Alabama from north to south, but wherever clouds are hiding the sun, it will be a couple of degrees cooler. Lows tonight will mostly be in the 40s, with a few colder spots hitting the 30s.

Current Temperatures Across Central Alabama
There is a great range in temperatures across Central Alabama at this hour due to the cloud cover in some area, along with the fog that refused to dissipate earlier. The warm spot at this time is Troy at 60 degrees, with the cool spot being Gadsden at 43 degrees.

Birmingham’s Climatology And Records
The normal high for December 21st is 55, while the normal low is 34. The record high for today was set back in 1923 at 73 degrees. The record low was set back in 1901 at 11 degrees.

What To Expect For Thursday
Temperatures should be around the same as they are today, as skies will be partly to mostly cloudy, especially during the early morning hours and the late evening through the overnight hours. For a few hours during the late morning through the afternoon, skies may actually be partly to mostly clear. Afternoon highs will be in the mid 50s to low 60s across Central Alabama from north to south. Low will be in the 30s across much of the area, with a few 40s in the extreme southern locations.

National Extremes
Naples, Florida recorded the warmest high temperature for Tuesday at 88 degrees. Baker, Oregon recorded the coldest low temperature for last night into the early morning hours today at -4 degrees.

On This Day In Weather History: 1929
An exceptional storm produced snow from the Middle Rio Grande Valley of Texas to southern Arkansas. The storm produced 26 inches of snow at Hillsboro TX, 18 inches at El Dorado AR, and 14 inches at Bossier LA.
