An Awesome Tuesday At Late Midday Across Central Alabama

The sun is out in full force, not only for all of Central Alabama, but for pretty much all of the southeastern U.S. with the exception of southern Louisiana and western parts of North Carolina. With those clear skies and ridging in place over the southeast, comes warm temperatures. Skies will remain clear for the afternoon through the evening and overnight hours tonight. Afternoon highs will top out in the low to mid 70s, with overnight lows dropping into the 40s.

Birmingham’s Climatology And Records
The normal high for January 31st is 55, while the normal low is 33. The record high for today was set back in 1957 at 75 degrees. The record low was set back in 1966 at 5 degrees.

Wednesday
Clouds will move in during the afternoon tomorrow ahead of an approaching cold front. Most of the day, if not the whole day, will remain dry, but a few isolated showers could be possible during the late night and overnight hours for the northern locations in Central Alabama. Afternoon temperatures will be warm once again, with highs in the upper 60s to the lower 70s. The odds for anyone getting rain during the overnight hours is 1 in 5, and totals will be light (less than 1/10 inch) if any falls at all.

Thursday & Friday
Cloudy skies with a few periods of light rain can be expected for Thursday and Friday, as the cold front drifts to the south through the northern parts of the state. Temperatures will be cooler, with highs in the mid 50s to the lower 70s across the area from north to south on Thursday, and in the lower 50s to upper 60s across the area on Friday.

The First Weekend Of February
Saturday looks like it will be the dry day for the weekend. Skies will be partly cloudy, and afternoon highs will be in the lower 50s to the lower 60s across the area. Clouds will be on the increase for Saturday night, and rain chances increase for at least the northern half of Central Alabama for Sunday. Models are still trending drier for the day, and the rain amounts look to be very light at this time, less than 1/4 inch. Highs will be in the upper 50s to upper 60s across the area.

For Those Headed To The Beach
What a great week on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico from Fort Morgan over to Panama City Beach. Plenty of sunshine in the forecast from today through Saturday, with a slight risk of showers on Sunday. Highs will be in the 60s to lower 70s. Click here to see the Beach Forecast Center page.

National Extremes
The warmest high temperature set for the nation on Monday afternoon was 82 degrees, set in Ventura, California. The coldest low temperature for Monday night and into this morning was -19 degrees, set in Saranac Lake, New York. The highest rainfall total for the 24 hour period starting at 2PM Monday to 2PM today was 0.31 inches at Detroit, Michigan.

On This Day In Weather History: 1989
The barometric pressure at Norway, AK, reached 31.85 inches (1078.4 mb) establishing an all-time record for the North American Continent. The temperature at the time of the record was about 46 degrees below zero. Severe arctic cold events began to invade the north central U.S. The temperature at Great Falls MT plunged 85 degrees in 36 hours. Valentine NE plummeted from a record high of 70 degrees to zero in just nine hours. Northwest winds gusted to 86 mph at Lander WY, and wind chill readings of 80 degrees below zero were reported in Montana. Sixty-four cities in the central U.S. reported record highs for the date as readings reached the 60s in Michigan and the 80s in Kansas.
