Colder but Remaining Dry

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

It’s a somewhat chilly start to the day today, but a reinforcing shot of colder air will bring the coldest day of March to Central Alabama tomorrow morning. Tomorrow is going to be a rather raw day, but I expect sunshine to be plentiful so perhaps it won’t feel quite so bad. Today, though, be aware that there is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect for area lakes, so you need to be aware that the wind could affect outdoor activities.

It’s going to be a rather benign week ahead for us with no significant weather features expected to impact Central Alabama. Certainly a welcome relief from the violent weather of two days ago.

After a cold day tomorrow, temperatures across Central Alabama should rebound nicely with readings back into the lower 60s by Monday. And by Wednesday we could even be flirting with the 70s.

A short wave trough moves across the Southeast on Thursday. Moisture appears limited with this feature though we could see showers along the Gulf Coast on Thursday and Friday. As that trough moves across the Southeast, another, stronger trough moves through the Central Rockies. This trough generates a fairly strong surface low that will move into the Great Lakes area on Saturday and drag a cold front into Alabama. So this appears to be the next significant threat of precipitation for Central Alabama. This system will bear some watching for the potential for severe weather north of here.

That front will bring another cool down, but it really looks like it will be short lived.

In the longer term, the GFS maintains a fairly active pattern, but the main westerly flow pulls a bit north of the southern tier of the US. This would mean some mild weather for Central Alabama. GFS seems to be overdoing rain in the long term, but it is the long term so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Really enjoyed reading to the kids out at Berry Middle School yesterday morning as part of their “Rock and Read A Thon. I read from “Isaac’s Storm” written by Erik Larsen. It is the story of the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, the worst single natural disaster to ever affect the US. I sure hope I was able to instill an interest in reading in the students.

Another Weather Xtreme Video will be posted tomorrow morning by 9 am or so. I hope that you have a great weekend. God bless.
