NIGHTS AND MORNINGS GETTING COOLER: Here is a look at the forecast lows for Birmingham straight from the GFS MOS in coming mornings:

Tomorrow (Wednesday) 58
Thursday 53
Friday 54
Saturday 56

You have to figure we will hear of a few colder valleys reaching the upper 40s at daybreak Thursday. For us fall weather fans, this is a great time of the year.

While the nights will be cool, afternoons will be warm since dry heats and cools very effectively; afternoon highs will remain generally in the low to mid 80s through the weekend.

TO THE EAST: An upper low will try to back up a bit, pushing moisture into Northeast Georgia later this week, but at this time it looks like that moist air will remain east of Alabama, and for now we are not going to forecast any significant chance of rain through the weekend.

TROPICS: Our tropical system near Hispanolia sure looks good this morning; that thing should becoming Tropical Storm Kyle during the next 24 hours, and models push it northward toward Long Island, or the New England coast by late Friday or Saturday as a hurricane. This could be a big story for a highly populated section of the U.S. coast; our friends in New York City, Providence, and Boston need to pay attention. No, this won’t be a big category four or five hurricane, but any hurricane can do plenty of damage up there due to the population density.

In addition to Kyle, a strong onshore flow will develop over the mid-Atlantic region, with potential for gale force winds by Thursday. Some wild weather for the Atlantic coast over the next five days.

COOLEST AIR SO FAR THIS SEASON? The GFS continues the idea of a deep upper trough by the middle of next week over the eastern U.S., actually developing into a deep cut off low near Chattanooga. This could bring the coolest air so far this season to Alabama in about a week or so; look out for the 40s right as October begins. Nice.

QUESTION/ANSWER: Here is a comment on a post from yesterday:

“Could someone who has a lot of weather knowledge give me an educated guess what they think the weather will be like on Oct. 11, 2008. My son is getting married that day, and I so want the weather to be just like it was today!”

Here on the blog we call this voodoo country; there is little skill in a specific weather forecast beyond seven days, so nobody has an answer for you, unfortunately. But, October is the driest month of the year, so you always stand a great chance of enjoying some excellent weather on October 11. We will have a rough idea around the middle of next week.
