Not much change in our weather today and tomorrow; partly sunny and mild days will highlight the forecast with afternoon highs somewhere between 68 and 72 for most communities. Quite a contrast to one week ago at this moment when we were in a high risk of severe weather and anticipating a “red letter” severe weather day.

THE WEEKEND: I still think we won’t see much rain over the weekend. Sure, a few showers might show up, but they will be widely scattered, and rainfall amounts will be light and spotty with limited low level moisture and weak upper forcing. Afternoons will stay pleasantly mild.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues to show a strong cut-off upper low forming over Southeast Texas late in the weekend, and this feature will drift slowly eastward. It still looks like the best chance of showers and storms will come during the middle of the week; the 06Z run hints that Wednesday will be the best day for showers. And, severe weather doesn’t look especially likely in this setup, although some of the stronger storms might produce some hail due to the cold air aloft associated with the upper low.

LONG RANGE: The 06Z run of the GFS is showing a cold, upper trough forming from the Great Lakes down to the Deep South in the March 16-18 time frame. There is not any really good run to run consistency out in this period, but if the latest run is correct we will have a temporary intrusion of colder air during that time. The good news is that we still don’t see any big severe weather setup for Alabama during the next two weeks. And, generally speaking, rainfall should continue to be below normal for the rest of March. Keep in mind that Birmingham has a rainfall deficiency of 4.93″ for 2007, and the risk of wildfires continues to increase. Be very careful if you are doing any outdoor burning in coming weeks.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase a new Midland NOAA Weather Radio at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that allows you to choose the counties for which the alarm sounds. Get more information here. Most locations should have a new shipment in place now.

Another busy day is ahead; I will be doing a weather program this morning at Concord Elementary School, and right after that I will be with a big group of realtors for a First Real Estate “10-K” drawing at the Hoover Country Club. Then, tonight I will be down at the BJCC doing the weather live from the Spring Home and Garden Show at 5:00 and 6:00. Every time I think of that show my mind runs back to the great “Blizzard of 1993”, which was the weekend of that show, which needless to say had to be cancelled.

Between all of that I should have time to crank out the afternoon edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Extreme video, which should be available by 3:30…..
