STORM ALERT XTREME IS TOMORROW: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm Alert Xtreme, is tomorrow at the BJCC during the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years), and learn from one of the most brilliant weather researchers in the country, our own Dr. Tim Coleman. We encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply cannot get enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.
BEST RAIN TO THE SOUTHEAST: The heaviest rain during the next 24 hours will be over the southeast counties of Alabama, in the general area from Montgomery to Dothan, where better dynamics will also produce a chance of strong to severe storms this afternoon. SPC maintains a slight risk of severe weather for this part of Alabama, and eastward into Georgia and the Carolinas. Around here, I am still not convinced it rains all that much. However, the NAM is still suggesting 1.05″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is printing 0.97″. My fear is that the action down in South Alabama cuts off the good inflow of moisture into the northern half of Alabama. Lets hope we get those good rain totals, but don’t be shocked if we don’t get them.
TONIGHT: Looks like the cold front won’t get in here until late tonight, so for tonight’s high school playoff games temperatures will most likely stay mild; generally in the 60s. We will also maintain the chance of showers, but the main band of showers with the front might hold off until after midnight.
COLD WEEKEND: I sure get the idea temperatures will hover in the 47 to 50 degree range all day with an icy north wind. And, the models are much slower in moving rain out of here; I think we will need to hang on to the chance of some lingering light rain tomorrow morning. And, I also get the idea the clouds will hang tough most of the day now from I-20 north… it will be a raw, cold, and damp day.
We will be very close to freezing both Sunday and Monday morning; the high Sunday will be in the 50s. Dry air means a sunny sky Sunday and Monday.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tomorrow, the University of Georgia will be at Auburn for an early kick off at 11:30 a.m. and televised by Raycon. It should be partly sunny with about 50 at kick off and peaking near 53 during the game. Brisk, northwest winds will add a distinct chill. Over on the opposite side of the state, Mississippi State will be in Tuscaloosa to play Alabama tomorrow night with a 6:45 p.m. kick off on ESPN. You will need extra warm clothing. Temperatures will be in the mid 40s at kick off lowering to near 40 by the end of the game.
NEXT WEEK: Cool air continues to flow into Alabama next week; looks like highs generally in the 50s and lows in the 30s, with potential for freezing temperatures just about every morning. At this time the week looks dry.
VOODOO LAND: Model madness is the story… watch the Weather Xtreme video to see how the 06Z run of the GFS handles the cold air shots later in the month. It shows a strong push of cold air in about 7 to 8 days, followed by an impulse that will bring a chance of some light rain around Monday November 24. Even a hint of light snow near the Tennessee border. I think the screaming message is that temperatures will remain below average for the next 14 days or so. It is a cold pattern. And, it should be interesting to forecast.
TWITTER: Don’t forget, you can follow our news and weather updates from ABC 33/40 on Twitter here. And, my personal Twitter feed is here if you want to keep up with my adventures in life. Twitter is a short messaging service you can receive via the web, cell phone, or IM.

I will be out at the lunchroom today at Oak Mountain Elementary School for a “Lunch With Mr. James”… then back in the office by early afternoon and the next Weather Xtreme video will be posted by 3:30 or so. I hope to see you at Storm Alert Xtreme tomorrow!
