President John F. Kennedy stepped outside the Texas Hotel in Fort Worth to address an enthusiastic early morning crowd in a light rain on this morning in 1963. The President was kicking off his 1964 re-election campaign by making a swing through Texas, home state of his Vice President Lyndon Johnson.

The weather cleared as Air Force One left Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth for the short hop over to Dallas’ Love Field. As the clouds parted, President Kennedy commented to Governor John Connelly, “It looks like we will get sunshine.”

As the Presidential motorcade made its way through city streets thronged with 250,000 cheering Dallasites, Governor Connelly’s wife Nellie told President Kennedy, “You can’t say Dallas doesn’t love you.” The motorcade turned onto Houston Street, and made its way toward the hairpin turn onto Elm, where it would pass by the Texas School Book Depository.
