Thanks to Dr. Tim for this review of the weekend situation below….

I am in the weather office at ABC 33/40, and have had a chance to review the 18Z model runs. Lets look at the bullet points of our weekend forecast:

*The Pacific storm now over the Southwest U.S. is in the American upper air network, so we expect much better model performance.

*Anytime a storm system moves in from the Pacific, moves across the southern U.S., and gets involved with cold air over the eastern U.S., the forecast is complex and difficult.

FRIDAY: We will continue to forecast a good chance of rain Friday. The NAM shows light amounts; the 18Z run of that model is printing only 0.02″ in Birmingham; the GFS shows 0.19″. We will forecast periods of rain, with amounts of one-quarter to one-half inch likely for the northern half of the state. It will be a cool rain with temperatures in the 50s, and while there could be a few elevated thunderstorms, the air should be cool and stable.

SATURDAY: The surface front moves to near the Gulf coast and becomes stationary. Then, a wave forms on the front, which will spread some light rain up into Alabama. After seeing the 18Z model set, no doubt that we will need to mention a chance of light rain during the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa. Nothing heavy, no storms, just a chance of light rain. It looks like a cool rain as well; we will lower the kickoff temperature to 52 degrees. So, dress warmly if you are going to the game, and take some rain gear.

SUNDAY: The wave deepens and moves to the northeast, pulling colder air into Alabama. The 18Z model output does not support snow for Alabama, but the day looks windy and cold with some lingering light rain or drizzle. We will struggle to get out of the 30s.

MONDAY: Cold is the word; looks like a high in the 30s with some risk of snow flurries or snow showers in the cold air. We will have to revise our forecast numbers down for Monday.

Needless to say, stay tuned for updates in coming days as this very interesting weather pattern unfolds. I will crank out a Weather Xtreme video tomorrow afternoon after a big Thanksgiving feast at our home.

I received this e-mail message from a friend this morning… I thought I would share it with you since all of our blog readers are family…

If you want to learn the lesson of Thanksgiving then it is essential — actually it is critical — to adopt a “Thankful” attitude in your life.

When you focus on your God given gifts and appreciate what you have been given, you are leading a Thankful life. When you get up in the morning, jump out of bed, and are thankful you are alive, that is leading a Thankful life. When you sincerely are grateful for your health, your family, your friends, your job and sustenance, you are leading a Thankful existence.

Don’t worry, it is okay to want more than you have – especially if your value system is healthy and you want more so you can do more to help others. Don’t forget to be Thankful when things are going well for you – and, yes, even when they are challenging. Perspective brings happiness in your life, and the right perspective brings meaning into your life. So when you wake up Friday morning, don’t complain that you have eaten too much — thank God you had a great meal and then go to the gym.

This was not sent to you to ask you to forward it to anyone. It was sent to you because I consider you a friend. I am thankful for you and blessed because our paths have crossed. May you have a Thanksgiving weekend that is filled with safety, rest, relaxation, and thankfulness.
