Learning About Vorticity, Constant Pressure Levels and Wind Barbs, Among Other Weathery Things
The sixth grade science teachers at Pizitz Middle School in Vestavia kicked off their second annual weather balloon launch yesterday with a special training session for 395 Launch Weather Officers.
- Bill Murray led 5 sections of Launch Weather Officer training for 395 sixth grade students today.
- He was assisted by his wife Elle and AlabamaWX meteorologist Scott Martin.
- Students engaged with the material in a special workbook concepted by Bill and designed by Scott.
- They learned about vorticity, humidity and condensation as well as factors that could affect the flight.
- The students answered questions and won prizes.
- The students were introduced to the GFS computer model which they will use to forecast potential launch dates.
Today, they will produce their own launch forecasts using a set of meteorological parameters that are tied to factors that could affect the launch and flight.
Last year’s launch was a huge success, the brainchild of Teacher Diane McAliley, attaining an altitude of 106,693, with video and data over the complete flight. The payload was miraculously recovered in a tree in Randolph County in East Alabama.
